These small beetles are referred to as the Ladybug. First, let\'s start with a little background information on this specific ladybug. The official name of this ladybug is *Harmonia axyridis* or as I call it, the multicolored Asian Lady Beetle. Ladybugs control tree-dwelling aphids on pecans, apples, christmas trees,... They are a beneficial insect that controls harmful insects and provides an alternative to pesticides. Ladybugs spend the spring and summer in the trees feeding on aphids.

Prevention - How to get rid of ladybugs

Install tight-fitting door sweeps or thresholds at the base of all exterior entry doors. Gaps of 1/16 inch or more will permit entry of insects. Seal openings where pipes and wires enter the foundation and siding, for instance, around outdoor faucets, receptacles, gas meters, clothes dryer vents, and telephone/cable TV wires. Holes can be plugged with caulk, cement, urethane expandable foam, steel wool, copper mesh, or other suitable construction sealant. Caulk around windows, doors, chimneys and fascia boards, etc. using a high quality silicone or acrylic latex caulk. Repair gaps and tears in window and door screens. Repair screens in roof and soffit vents, and in bathroom and kitchen fans. Keep siding, eaves and soffits in good repair, replacing damaged areas if necessary, to keep the exterior walls as insect-proof as possible.

Burn lemon scented candles

Like mosquitos and gnats, ladybugs seem to dislike the smell of lemon. Burn three or four lemon candles in each room where you have a ladybug problem and it should at least cut down on the number of ladybugs coming in. Unfortunately, it doesn\'t always get rid of ladybugs that are already in the house.

Clean with Ammonia

And like most people, ladybugs don\'t care much for the smell of ammonia, either. Use a rag soaked in amonia to wipe down your doors, windows, and any other surface where you see ladybugs gathering.

Menthol works great, as in the Vick\'s "Vapo" products. You can put some in a humidifier and it will disperse in the room, or there is a plug-in version you can buy. You can sprinkle a bottle outside as well.

Ladybug traps

If you prefer immediate and lethal results for the bugs flying about, you can play Obi Wan Kenobi, using a hand-held zapper instead of a light sabre. You just hold this thing in a bug’s path (you can also use it on houseflies, wasps, and mosquitoes) and when contact is made, the bug gets a lethal dose of electricity. A bug zapper/vacuum will suck bugs out of the air, and you can decide whether to release it or whack it. You become judge, jury, and bug zapper.
